High school is a difficult time for almost every teenager. In addition to the normal pressures of growing up and high school, learning disabilities can be overwhelming. Because many children with conditions such as attention deficit disorder are very bright, they really are not forced to confront their condition until they enter secondary school. Often, the students are under achieving but they are not failing so it is difficult to recognize underlying problems until it is too late and secondary conditions, such as social or emotional issues, have taken root. Learning disability high schools can help students learn to face and even overcome their challenges and adopt a lifestyle geared towards success. With the proper assistance, many students are even able to go on to college.
Brehm Preparatory School is a boarding school in Illinois that works with children in grade 6 through 12. We offer a holistic approach to high school learning disabilities with the goal of leading a successful life after school is over. 75% of our graduates go on to college. This is because unlike many learning disability high schools, we make an attempt to address conditions that occur along with the main learning challenges. We have full time nurses and speech language pathologists on staff, for example, and partnerships with local psychologists and psychiatrists. Too many children in the United States with manageable conditions such as attention deficit hyperactive disorder or dyslexia also develop symptoms of depression, substance abuse and even eating disorders. It is our philosophy that whether these are related to the frustration of the learning disability or not, they need to be addressed and acknowledged as the student adopts a healthy lifestyle that is geared towards success.
