Part of the curriculum at Brehm Preparatory School is something we refer to as Learning Cognition. This is a three section approach the student takes towards understanding, assessing and overcoming their disabilities. Early on, the students begin to learn about various challenges to the learning process. They will also participate in a verbal or non verbal learning disability assessment. The goal is for the child to identify and, to a certain extent, quantify their own individual challenges. The next step in the process is the development of study skills appropriate to their own needs. For example, in the case of a non-verbal learning disability, this may include outlining techniques, the use of assistive technologies or many other strategies. After a certain measure of success has been achieved academically, the student is finally taught more organizational and time management skills that will allow them to excel outside the classroom.
Of interest to many parents is the way strategies for success are determined. The first step, of course, is the verbal or non verbal learning disability assessment. This will give the student and their teachers a good indication of their strengths and weaknesses. From there, various strategies can be studied and experimented with until the right combination is found. Combination is the key concept. Just as no two students are alike, no two disabilities are exactly alike. Each student, whether they are faced with a reading, attention or non-verbal learning disability, will help determine the overall strategy that is best for their needs. By encouraging the student to actively participate in the process, the chance of success is much greater. This is only part of Brehm's overall holistic approach. Contact us to learn more today.
