Speech And Language Development In School Age Children

It can be difficult to detect learning disabilities in small children. Although you can track the speech and language development in school age children to try to indicate problems, certain disabilities will not be readily apparent. Reading and attention disorders tend to manifest themselves in an easily recognized manner. Non verbal learning disabilities can often slip "under the radar." Many children with NVLD develop language skills very early. They will often be able to converse with adults in a way typical of children years older. Often they will also easily learn to read. Even though they seem advanced, they still have an as of yet unrecognized non verbal learning disability. As they progress through school, the NVLD will become apparent.

Non Verbal Learning Disabilities

Of course, there is no one way to help every student with NVLD issues. If there were, Brehm Preparatory School would be able to In early elementary grades, students with NVLD will be able to easily keep up with their school work. Speech and language development in school age children with NVLD issues will continue to progress and many children will be thought of as gifted. However, as they progress through school and work becomes more of an individual responsibility they will begin to have difficulties. Math is frequently extremely difficult for those with non verbal learning disabilities, for example. Because these children excelled verbally early on, their new found school troubles are commonly looked upon as laziness. A further difficulty in the identification of NVLD in students is the fact that instead of being disruptive, they are often quiet and withdrawn. There are signs of NVLD, though. Fine motor skill impairment, difficulty with mathematics, particularly word problems, and an inability organize information is common. Many children with NVLD issues will not be able to process spoken material without writing it down.

Non Verbal Learning Disability Strategies

Once NVLD has been identified in your child, you will probably need to find a specialty school. Unfortunately, many boarding schools are simply not equipped for this type of disability and, in fact, may have a great deal of trouble even identifying it. At Brehm Preparatory School, non verbal learning disability strategies include incorporating technology such as recording devices and laptops to aid in taking notes. Outlining techniques and time management skills are also taught. Brehm has a record of success with students faced with a variety of non verbal, attention and reading disabilities.
