About Brehm

Since 1982, families of adolescents and young adults with complex learning disabilities across the United States and in several other countries have known Brehm Preparatory School as the place where their son or daughter learned how to learn. Brehm provides a holistic education that uniquely integrates the academic, social, and emotional needs of students. Brehm offers a family-style environment designed to foster independence and responsibility. Guiding the students within the everyday school community are dedicated teachers, dorm parents, tutors, and staff who actively participate in the 24-7 program. While many components exist within the Brehm education, the core may be the authentic blend of faculty professionalism and caring evident by even a brief visit to the Brehm campus. During the schools 25 years of existence, Brehm has taught students from 41 states and four other countries. In addition to the student body, the Brehm community includes an active Parents Association. Many alumni continue to connect with the school, and several have held employment at Brehm, where they pass along the mentoring and nurturing that they themselves received as students. The administrative and support staff provide the infrastructure which makes possible the full range of operations and relationships with all Brehm stakeholders.

Brehm’s 80-acre campus contains a Student Activities Center, including gymnasium,
dining hall, theatre, cyber café, and exercise room, a health center, five dormitories,
two honors apartments, three classroom buildings, a pond, a woodshop,
a recreation office, maintenance facilities, and an administration building.

Brehm provides a comprehensive range of services, which include instruction in core academic areas, social skills development, life-skills development, recreational activities, cultural enrichment, and career/college exploration, and transition. Medical and psychological counseling services are available on a contractual basis as needed.

Learning Disabilities
Brehm Preparatory School addresses a broad spectrum of learning disabilities. Students at Brehm may demonstrate processing, perceptual, or conceptual deficits, which occur in visual, auditory, or motor functioning. Deficits in one or more of these areas affect academic, social, and emotional growth. Brehm students receive instruction and counseling as to the nature of their learning disabilities and their specific learning styles. Students can cope with the demands of their content coursework by using strategies and techniques they learn.
There is daily emphasis on developing advocacy skills and organizational strategies that will allow students to cope with demands in the classroom, the job market, and in family and personal interactions. The goal is for Brehm students to apply these strategies throughout life, and to become self-advocates in dealing with their learning differences.

It was her dream that Brehm become that special place where children with learning disabilities find a safe and nurturing environment to live and learn.
