The U.S. Department of Education chose Brehm to be recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence for 1992-93. Brehm was the only L.D. boarding school so honored. Mrs. Brehm, Executive Director Dr. Richard Collins, and Physical Education Director Greg Douglas journeyed to the White House to receive the award from Vice President Albert Gore.
During the selection process for the Blue Ribbon award, schools were asked to provide written materials including information on their progress toward achieving the National Education Goals. They were also asked to detail their science and mathematics programs.
Experienced school administrators visited the nominated schools and submitted reports on what they found. Reviewers then made recommendations to the Secretary of Education, Richard W. Riley, for final selection. "These schools are testimony to the imagination and dedication that mark education reform efforts around the country," Riley said. "Each of the Blue Ribbon schools has demonstrated the key ingredients for excellence."
