Scholarship/Financial Aid Program

Financial aid benefits families by offsetting tuition for and assisting families who otherwise could not send a child to Brehm School and OPTIONS.

The Brehm School Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, ensures the continuing advancement and mission of Brehm and OPTIONS (junior high, senior high and post-high school programs for students with complex learning disabilities).

YOUR GIFT WILL TRANSFORM LIVES! Children and adults with learning disabilities usually have a normal range of intelligence, but these learning disabilities (LD) create roadblocks that hinder academic, social and emotional growth. Tragically, without a specialized education, LD children often are not able to successfully connect with society, find employment, or live independent lives.

Since 1982, the professionals at Brehm School and OPTIONS Transitions to Independence have been successful at elevating these individuals above those roadblocks by discovering how each student learns best. Brehm and OPTIONS offer a unique holistic education that empowers students to become independent lifelong learners.

SUPPORT THE FOUNDATION FOR BREHM AND OPTIONS. The Brehm School Foundation was incorporated as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization in 1983 by Carol Brehm, the founder of Brehm School.

The Foundation stimulates voluntary private support from alumni, parents, friends, corporations, foundations and others to benefit Brehm School, OPTIONS Transitions to Independence, and future development of the Brehm mission.

The Foundation oversees the investment of the endowment for the School and also manages the Annual Giving Campaign, major gift program, planned giving, and other advancement vehicles on behalf of Brehm Preparatory School, Inc.

This model of advancement strengthens our financial sustainability, expands our volunteer leadership, and secures our ethical stewardship of charitable giving to support future Brehm and OPTIONS students.

The Foundation seeks partnerships with individuals, small businesses, corporations, and foundations to fulfill their philanthropic goals. The Foundation upholds the rights of the donor and the ethical stewardship of philanthropy, ensuring that all gifts are used for their intended purposes.

We desire to see the Brehm mission and vision advance by ensuring the future of Brehm School and OPTIONS, as well as by increasing opportunities to support the families we serve. Your partnership with the Brehm School Foundation will make this possible. Your gift can be in the form of cash, checks, credit cards, shares of stock, inclusion in wills, services, or products.

When we look deeper we understand that everything we “have” is a gift that has come from outside of us.

At Brehm and OPTIONS (leading innovators among schools for Learning Disabilities), every one of our committed staff (from Teachers or Independent Living Counselors to Speech Therapists) work together daily to advance the young lives of students with Learning Disabilities.

We understand that without your gifts, we would not be able to do all that we do for so many of our students with real challenges.

As we have each year since Carol Brehm started everything in motion more than 30 years ago, we simply look to do more for more students in need.  We ask that you join us as we move forward with an exciting future that has already begun.

In our universe, everything transforms, but nothing transforms faster than seed.

After through research by Brehm and OPTIONS leadership, and with your unrestricted gifts, the Brehm School Foundation planted “a great seed.”

A little more than a year ago, the Brehm School Foundation Board of Directors (comprised of; current and former Brehm and OPTIONS parents; and other relatives) voted to grant $50,000 from unrestricted donations and pledges to launch and expand Arrowsmith at Brehm and OPTIONS.

MRI Scan

This is an MRI cross-section taken at the imaging facilities at Carbondale Memorial Hospital with the help of researchers at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Brehm is the very first boarding school in the world to implement the Arrowsmith Program.  The advances our students have already made have exceeded our expectations.

The Brehm Institute for Cognitive and Curricular Research (headed by Dr. Richard Collins) is now collaborating with Arrowsmith Canada and researchers at Southern Illinois University Carbondale – School of Medicine, University of British Columbia, and the University of Washington – Seattle to produce MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to detect new brain activity and pathways.  The results of this international study could help countless young lives across the globe.

(adjacent clock photo) Arrowsmith remaps the brain. It identifies, intervenes and strengthens weak cognitive capacities (underlying learning dysfunctions) through a program of specific cognitive exercises.

Heroes make a difference. The  Annual Giving Campaign needs heroes like you. Together, we can continue the great momentum we’ve gained for more than 30 years.

Every year, Brehm and OPTIONS students, who are tested by adversity, step into the world as independent people and become part of our communities.  They will continue to touch the lives of others daily as they become rays of hope and inspiration. The positive ripples of Brehm and OPTIONS continue for decades – far and wide.
