Electives

The objectives of our Electives Program are as follows:

  1. To give students a broad spectrum of courses not covered during a regular academic day.
  2. To allow students to select courses that reflects their interests.
  3. To introduce to students new concepts and ideas which otherwise may not occur in the rest of the curriculum.
  4. To provide a release from the traditional academic curriculum.

The following list of electives reflects the courses most often taught throughout the school year.

Team Sports:
Certain times during the week students stay on campus and participate in a variety of team sports.  These sports include volleyball, softball, ultimate Frisbee, and kickball.  These activities help the students not only learn how to play the game, but they also learn the value of teamwork, commitment, and physical fitness.

Art:
The after school Art Program is divided into two sections: Beginning and Advanced Art.  Beginning Art focuses on painting, drawing and smaller craft projects.  In Advanced Art, students are able to work on more complex projects such as glass blowing, metal smithing and pottery.

Total Fitness:
Students who participate in Total Fitness are given a variety of opportunities to stay fit.  Activities include weightlifting, walking, jogging, racquet ball, basketball, and a variety of exercise machines.  Before participating, students are given direct instruction on how to operate the equipment properly.

Club Dancing:
Students learn how to perform new dances and routines, or just perfect their skills, promoting better coordination and physical fitness.

Outdoor Skills:
The Outdoor Skills program focuses on teaching students how to feel safe in the outdoors.  Students are taught survival skills such as fire starting and shelter building, as well as ways to obtain food and water in the wild.  Staff also teaches the participants about wild life, which animals are safe and which is not.  Another important aspect of the class is that students learn how to “leave no trace” when they leave an area outdoors.

Hockey:
Students learn how to work as a team and stay active while playing hockey.  Staff members participate in the games to keep the game moving and to make sure everyone is safe.

Community Service:
Community Service takes the students out into the community to volunteer their time.  Opportunities for participation include local daycare facilities, nursing homes, and community activities such as Irish Fest.

Drama:
Students participate in making movies, skits and plays that they write themselves.  The Drama Club gives the students an outlet to express their creativity and emotions in a positive, safe setting.

International Trip:
Offered second semester, this class provides an opportunity for students taking part in the annual school trip to study the places they will be traveling to.  Students will research the geography, history and culture of the countries and cities they will visit, and will be responsible for presenting information on selected topics to the whole group.  Activities include map-making, learning key phrases in a new language, research on the web, report-writing, and oral presentations.

Wood Shop:
Students learn the basics of working with wood, including measurement, planning a project, safety, and the proper use of woodworking tools.
