I remember no recess, "not trying hard enough."
I remember "LD."
I remember tears and broken families,
The uncaring attitudes of others, as if this was normal, that one child leave.
I remember the anger and not being able to express why.
I remember "LD."
I remember leaky chicken coops for classrooms;
Toilets backed-up in bathtubs in the dirty, dark, rundown old farmhouse
Called a dorm ... Yes, I remember... "LD."
A million miles away. I remember humiliation.
I remember being demeaned by "LD."
I remember a boy ... and dreams.
I remember a dream.
I remember where students have a caring and responsive faculty.
A school where students enjoy a home atmosphere.
A school that would prepare them to live on their own, with confidence in this world. Our world.
A dream of a school, A school where dyslexia and "LD" would be met with encouragement,
And left with pride and the knowledge to overcome.
The dreams and goals will never cease.
The memories live on.
May your memories of Brehm be good,
Your dreams fulfilled and your goals be obtained.
I remember... When dreams came true!
Carol Brehm wrote this poem for Brehm’s 10th Anniversary Celebration. This poem reflects her frustration in finding an appropriate school for her son, Tyson. It was her dream that Brehm become that special place where children with learning disabilities find a safe and nurturing environment to live and learn. Tyson was in the first graduating class at Brehm. |
