POST-SECONDARY STUDENTS & FAMILIES ALUMNI SUPPORT BREHM SPECIAL EVENTS

Medical Services

Five full-time nurses work to coordinate and supervise the medical needs of our students. They are involved in addressing the health, medical, psychiatric, and psychological needs of our students. They provide daily assessments and follow-up appointments with physicians and other professionals; prepare and administer medication with evaluation for side effects and therapeutic benefits; maintain medical and immunization records; monitor compliance with OSHA guidelines; and provide health education and wellness for our students.

Additionally, the nurses work to enhance the education process by maximizing the health and well-being of the students, thus enhancing the mission of Brehm. Together, with the therapeutic team, teachers, dorm staff, and recreation staff, the nurses strive to ensure that each child is in the best possible physical and emotional health to benefit from school experiences. The nursing team promotes health and wellness among the students with education and counseling regarding healthy lifestyle choices, such as proper nutrition, diet, personal hygiene, no substance abuse, exercise, and a balance of activities. Issues are addressed with students as they come up, so that potential problems may be averted. Students are empowered to participate in mature problem-solving with the nurses, promoting student growth.

The nurses implement programs and services to provide for the detection and follow-up of health problems, crisis intervention for ill and injured students, and control of infectious disease within the Brehm environment.
