Residence Life

Overview

Dormitory life is an integral part of the Brehm education. Brehm offers a family style living environment, designed to foster independence and responsibility. Students learn both the social skills for interacting with other people and the practical skills of independent living.

Each dorm is designed and built much the same as an apartment house, with bedrooms having one, two, or three occupants per room. This allows for a small group living arrangement of approximately 18 peers.

Two dorm parents, living within each dorm, supervise the students living in the dorm. In this supportive environment, emphasis is placed on group living; socialization and developing appropriate study behaviors.

Chores

Each student is responsible for the maintenance of his/her personal living space, along with the responsibility for a share of general dorm chores. Each student is also responsible for his/her own laundry.
Structuring Leisure Time Activities:
Brehm has a structured recreation program which occurs on weekdays between 3:35pm - 5:00pm, and weekends 10:00am - 9:00pm (times are approximate based on activities). Group and individual activities are planned and supervised by the Recreation Program Supervisor and his/her staff.

Tier System

Brehm evaluates student growth, level of maturity and problem solving skills through a tier system. Students are evaluated daily for room cleanliness (organization) time management, chore completion, behavioral/social skills (being respectful to staff as well as each other) and home work completion. A student's tier level determines privileges, free time, and off campus earned. This system is designed to develop and promote student responsibility and independence hours.

There are two distinct Tier Systems which account for each student's developmental and maturational level.
  • Residential Tier System I (RTS-I) which is typically for all students 14 years of age and under. RTS-1 also includes any student who is not yet ready for the tier system for older students.
  • Residential Tier System II (RTS-II) is typically for students age and older who are identified as being ready for the privileges available under this tier level.
  • While age is a factor in determining tier systems for an individual student maturity and responsibility also play a role. Parents and staff have direct input in this determination.

Structured Study Hall

From 7:30pm - 9:00pm, Sunday through Thursday, students are supervised and tutored by their dorm parents, dorm assistants, and various tutors. The Supervisors of Boarding Services supervises this process in the evenings and is responsible for the training of tutors and coordinating services. Specific group study activities are arranged when appropriate. Students have the ability to access computers in the classroom buildings in the evening in order to complete their work.
